The Challenge
Constructing a concrete chimney at the 1,320MW ultra-supercritical coal fired Payra power plant in Dhankhali, Patuakhali district, Bangladesh presents significant challenges for FERBECK INTERNATIONAL SA in a new country.

• Environmental Factors: Dealing with coastal conditions including strong winds (peak of almost 300 Km/hour), high humidity, and cyclones.
• Complex Construction: Building a 220-meter-high chimney with a foundation, concrete shell, challenging heavy lifting operations, including the one for a tune mass damper and various steel components.
• Technical Specificities: Incorporating borosilicate internal protection on the liners; installing access lifts, electric systems, and lightning protection.

The Solution
The consortium of FERBECK INTERNATIONAL SA and C3 Chimney Consultants and Construction Co., Ltd. (Consortium FINT-C3) executed the project comprehensively from engineering through procurement to construction, employing innovative strategies and technologies:

• Tuned Mass Damper (TMD): Integrated into the chimney design to mitigate the effects of strong winds. The damper absorbs and dissipates vibrational energy, ensuring structural stability. While it is common the use of TMD in steel stacks, this is one of the few applications on concrete chimneys worldwide.
• Continuous Slipform Technology: Utilized advanced slipform technology for 24/7 casting, ensuring the construction proceeded efficiently.
• High Quality Materials: Incorporated borosilicate anti-acid protection (Pennguard) in the two carbon steel liners, enhancing their durability.
• Advanced Engineering: Designed and implemented the whole chimney structure including windshield, steel platforms, walkways, liners, electrical system, earthing, elevators, and other auxiliary items.
